Time To Breathe

I once asked a travelin' man:
"What's that thing in your hand?"
He replied, with a blind smile:
"That be my time; all my while."

The idea scratched at my mind,
battering against the line,
licking the salt tablet I call brain.
"Does it not wane?"

He laughed and coughed,
"Of course it will drop.
That's the point of time,
to intoxicate like wine."

My thoughts became scattered,
my breath seemed staggered;
in my train of thought,
he went again on his walk.

I called to the man,
he turned like old sand,
"Why do you leave?"
"My time deserves to Breathe."
