Here, I'll give you an example of 4 bands that all sound different right out of the list I posted. Martyr, Anata, Psycroptic, and Atheist. All of them death metal(Atheist is a bit more thrashy, but they're from the early 90s, so their vocals aren't has "heavy"), and all sound different.

I'm not gonna lie though, there are alot of bands that do sound similar as far as metal goes, but I stay away from them for the most part.
