Alternative is just that its alternative a different sound then normal radio stuff. Its hard to classify Alternative. Muse is alternative but they dont sound like Cake which is another band

Ohh, I forgot so many bands!
Muse is a great band, their home town isn't too far from me. I'm going to give a few English bands, as it will help people experience British music and it is still classed as Alternative. Some you may like, some you won't. Boy Kill Boy The Courteeners Editors The Enemy Kaiser Chiefs Kasabian Klaxons The Kooks Maximo Park Scouting for Girls Snow Patrol Stereophonics The Verve The Wombats These bands are classed as Indie in Britain, but Indie is basically Alternative.
